Having been led, as we believe, by the Holy Spirit of God 1 to receive the Lord Jesus Christ as our Saviour 2, and upon the profession of our faith 3, having been baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost by correct scriptural authority 4; we do now in the presence of God, His holy angels, and this assembly, most solemnly and joyfully enter into this covenant one with another as the body of Christ 5, known as Smyrna Baptist Church 6.
We engage, therefore, by the aid of the Holy Spirit, to give our church pre-eminence 7 over all human institutions and organizations ( such as employment, education, sports, etc. ); to strive for its advancement 8 in knowledge 9, holiness 10, and comfort 11; to promote its prosperity and spirituality 12; to sustain its worship 13, ordinances 14, discipline 15, and doctrines 16; to contribute cheerfully and regularly 17 to the support of its ministry 18, of its expenses 19 ( via tithes and offerings ), and the spread of the Gospel throughout this city and beyond to all nations 20; and to honor, esteem and love our pastor( s ) 21, to pray for him ( them ) fervently and daily 22, to submit to him ( them ) in the exercise of his ( their ) spiritual office 23, and to attend consistently upon his ( their ) ministrations 23.
We also engage to maintain secret 24 and family devotion25; to bring up our children in the fear and admonition of the Lord 26; to seek the salvation of our kindred and acquaintances 27; to walk circumspectly in the world 28; to be just in our dealings 29, faithful in our engagements 30, modest in our appearance 31, and exemplary in our deportment 32; to avoid all gossip, tattling 33, backbiting 34, and unrighteous anger 35; to abstain from all worldly and harmful indulgences 36 ( such as alcoholic beverages, nicotine products, selling illegal drugs, ungodly movies/ TV/music )37; to oppose all conduct which compromises our Christian testimony ( Unscriptural Marriages, Traditions of men ) 38 and abstaining from all appearance of evil 39; and, to be zealous in our service for the Lord Jesus Christ 40.
We further engage to walk together in Christian charity 41 ; to watch over one another in brotherly love 42; to remember each other in prayer 43 ; to aid each other in sickness and distress 44 ; to cultivate Christian sympathy in feeling 45, and courtesy in speech 46; to be slow to take offense 47, but always ready for reconciliation 48, Without negligence we will defend the Ordinances of our Lord 49 ,
We moreover engage that if we remove from this city 50, we will, as soon as possible, unite with some other Baptist church of like faith and order 51, where we can carry out the spirit of this covenant and the principles of God’s Word 52.
I abide in the Smyrna Baptist Church Covenant.
